Keep the explanation simple

Tell your child that the dentist will count and look at their teeth. Use calm, positive words and avoid sharing difficult dental experiences before the appointment.

Choose a good time

A morning visit can work well for younger children when they are rested. Bring a favourite small toy or book if it helps them feel settled in a new place.

Let the visit build trust

A first appointment often focuses on becoming familiar with the chair, mirror and dental team. Giving a child time to observe and ask questions helps create confidence for future visits.

Build habits together

Help with twice-daily brushing, use an age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste as advised by your dentist, and make water the usual drink between meals. Regular visits help reinforce these routines.
